New York City's Asphalt Orchestra will lay concrete in The Alden in McLean when they bring their street band sounds indoors at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 6. Tickets are $25, $18 for MCC tax district residents. The theatre is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.
An iconoclastic 12-piece marching band conceived by Bang on a Can, Asphalt Orchestra premieres ambitious processional music from every corner of the music world, works that can coax funk from a funeral and would make a half-time show sparkle with sophistication. The group's repertoire ranges from music by pop wizard Björk, to jazz legend Charles Mingus, rock progressive Frank Zappa, Brazilian iconoclast songwriter Tom Zé and Zimbabwean provocateur Thomas Mapfumo. The New York Times describes Asphalt Orchestra as "part parade spectacle, part half-time show, and part cutting edge contemporary music concert... exhilarating!"
Asphalt Orchestra's debut album was released in 2010 by Cantaloupe Music. The group is directed by Ken Thomson and Jessica Schmitz.
